Yesteryear Collection

The Red Cross emblem has provided protection for military medical, military personnel and Red Cross workers on the battlefield for nearly 140 years. During this time National Red Cross Siciety's including the British Red Cross hav provided vital humanitarian relief to those in need at times of crisis. The British Red Cross was established in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian War, after a military man wrote a letter to The Times, calling for a society that would come to the aid of soldiers Several months later, a public meeting was held and The British National Society for Aid to the Sick and Wounded in War was formed. This noble Society began providing relief to the warring armies during the Franco-Prussian War. In 1905, the Society was reformed as the British Red Cross Society, which introduced The Voluntary Aid Scheme, which formed Voluntary Aid Detachments in every county in England.

The Red Cross was severely tested in the two World Wars, which wreaked great destruction, but the Red Cross came through. The organization provided essential aid to the wounded and to the countless immigrants uprooted by war.

The British red Cross has provided relief to the victims of international conflicts and disasters including refugees from the Hungarian Revolution (1956) and from Vietnam (1976); victims of natural disasters, such as the Iranian Earthquake (1962), the famine in Africa (1980-1989), Hurricane Mitch (1998) and the Columbia Earthquake (1999); and victims of disaster within the UK itself such as the collapse of the coal tip at Aberfan (1966), the Lockerbie air disaster (1988) and the Easter floods (1998).
